A beautiful palette of many shades of blue and green!

Last Sunday, May 5th, passed on in a mix of plenty of rain and a strong northern wind, which caused the candle-like flowers of the chestnut tree in front of my hotel room to dance. I took a quiet day as to outdoor activities: I just focussed on Slovenia and her recent history. The country has been allotted to ever changing coalitions… Continue reading

Passing rivers and walking around the lake

This morning I took the bus from Hotel Gorizia Palace to the railway station on the Piazza Transalpina. In the station hall it showed that this is a building dating from the early 20th century: plenty of dark wood, high ceilings, remarkable tiles on the floors. The original ticket counters have been saved, but are not in use anymore. Continue reading

From Gorizia to Cormòns: through the winegrowing area of the Collio

After the heavy thunderstorms of last night and the extensive rain in the early morning I left around 11 o’clock for my hike through the Collio, the Gorizia Hills, the winegrowing area to the (north-)west of Gorizia. Therefore I first went to the west to cross the river Isonzo (in Slovenian Soča). Here the river is wide with artificial rapids; I crossed it over a long footbridge. Continue reading

Gorizia: a tour of the city and over the border

This morning breakfast was as elaborate as it was in Trieste, but just slightly different: no longer the grilled eggplants and zucchini or the grated fennel by Signore Stefano, but pickled vegetables, like sweet-and-sour of paprika (agrodolce di peperoni) or mushrooms in oil (funghi sott’olio), which are tastier here than I can prepare it, large green olives with little acidity and small gherkins with a lot of acidity. Of course there are many sweets, but where is my lemon pie…?! Continue reading

High over the coastal road and deep into the cave

Yesterday I have made another attempt to cover the remaining 17½ kilometres of Stage B3, from Prosecco to Sistiana. Therefore I started in Prosecco. The weather was covered and not as nice as the past few days. Rain had also been forecasted – but for now I could still hike in my short-sleeved shirt. In Prosecco another symbol of the Alpe Adria Trail was standing – this time a real “road sign”. Continue reading

A Stage with far more plus points than minus points!

The day before yesterday I set off with a lot of anticipation to finally start the first stage of the Via Alpina. That was because of several reasons not very successful: I stranded somewhere on a desolate industrial area with moreover the threat of a thunderstorm. Today I started with regained energy to find my way back from that desolate industrial area towards nature and fresh air. That proved to be more difficult than I thought: which bus stop at which industrial area was the right one… Continue reading

A walk through Muggia

This morning at breakfast I couldn’t believe my eyes: I have never seen so many sweet dishes at a breakfast buffet! The lemon pie is my favourite, followed by chocolate rolls… And tiny cups of very strong espresso to wake up! Strengthened by so much sugar I set off to Muggia, where the first stage of the Via Alpina starts: Muggia to the Permuda Hut. Therefore I had to take the bus, Line 20. One has to buy a ticket in advance, because that is not possible on the bus, but surely at the many little booths – one can find one on the corner of every street. Continue reading
