From Fieschertal over the suspension bridge to Bellwald

Today I have made another attempt to start Stage 95 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina: from Fiescheralp to Riederalp. Therefore I took the train to Fiesch again: on arrival again a large crowd got off the train and into the Postal car, that would also stop at the valley station of the cable car to the middle station Fiescheralp. At that bus stop I didn’t get off: this time I didn’t like it either… Meanwhile I had the impression that all those crowds, like “distaster tourists”, wanted to have a look how the glaciers were melting and that it could be the last time these glaciers could be seen. Unfortunately it is a fact that the glaciers are melting and that it is a worrying development as well of course. I just didn’t want to be part of that “disaster tourism”… The Postal car continues it course to the village of Fieschertal. There I got off. Continue reading

Through the Aletsch forest and over the dam of the Gibidum Reservoir

This morning I took the 10.48 hrs train from Brig to Mörel, and got off two stops and 17 minutes later. The railway station in between is called Bitsch – it is funny to hear in what way this is announced in the train in English: it really sounds like “bitch” instead of “beach“! In Mörel it was only a three minutes’ walk to the valley station of the gondola, which eventually ends in Riederalp. The first part of the track goes to the village Ried-Mörel on the mountain shoulder. The gondola moves on very slowly, so people heading for Ried-Mörel can get off without a problem. Passengers for Riederalp have to remain seated: the gondola continues on another cable to the end station Riederalp. Continue reading

The trip to S-charl is beautiful  – in summer and in winter!

When I left Sulden am Ortler last Thursday, August 15th by bus, the driver was somehow grumpy, apparently not very happy to have to work on the festive day “Assumption of Mary”: it seemed as if he didn’t understand German, so buying a ticket to Scuol in Switzerland proved to be too large a task for me as well for him. So I bought a ticket to Mal. At the change of bus in Spondinig into the direction of Mals the ticket turned out to be wrong, but also this driver only spoke Italian – my co-passengers were interpreting for me… But the sun was shining, so why having any problems! The trip by Postal car from Mals to Zernez went well – I have cast a look to the steep slope from Taufers i.M. to the Rifairalm that I had climbed a week ago…! Continue reading

Panoramic views from the Rifair Scharte and the Glurner Köpfl

Yesterday morning I have started to hike Stage 69 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina: from Taufers im Münstertal, just on the border between Switzerland and Italy, via the Rifaier Alm over the Rifair Scharte Pass to Stilfs in the valley of the Suldenbach stream and the Stilfserjoch Pass. This stage is the sequel of Stage 68 of the Red Trail: from S-charl to Taufers over the S-charljöchl and through the beautiful Val Avigna valley, which I have hiked about two years ago, on June 13th 2017 and which I have enjoyed so much! ! No longer through the Clemgia Gorge…

Yesterday I have hiked Stage 67 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina for the second time, that is to say the first part: from Scuol to Plan da Funtanas, about halfway to S-charl, the destination of this stage. It was almost just on the day two years ago that I hiked this stage for the first time: on June 12th 2017 I have started on the Via Alpina! I still remember very well how amazing this hike had been – and hoe promising the Via Alpina was at that moment. And I know by now hoe amazing and promising the Via Alpina is – and without a doubt will continue to be! Continue reading

Another nice hike with many spring flowers

Today a stage of the Via Alpina was on the program: a next hike as a continuation of the wonderful track I have hiked last year, on op September 23th 2018. That has been Stage 61 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina: from the Caschina Hut to St. Antönien, but which I have hiked as a round trip: from St. Antönien to the Carschina Hut and back again. That tour was such a joy! Continue reading

The difficult track is the most beautiful track…

This morning the weather seemed to have improved compared to yesterday: there hardly were any clouds around the mountaintops, so after a tasteful breakfast (again!), which of course include the Birchermüesli, I took the 9.18 hours Postal car to St. Antönien to start a stage of the Via Alpina in an area that was completely new to me: Stage 61 of the Red Trail. Continue reading

Hiking along the water canals

Today’s weather could not be more different from yesterday’s weather: the sun was shining already early in the morning in a cloudless sky and it promised to be a beautiful and warm day. After a hearty breakfast – I like the breakfast cereals with spelt the most! – I took the 08.18 hrs. Postal car that would take me again to Mund. Continue reading

This morning I started from Brig to Blatten again with the 8.18 hrs. Postal car to continue once more on the Via Alpina with Stage 96 of the Red Trail, the second part actually, from Belalp to Mund. Continue reading

A Stage with beautiful views, but not from ladders…

Yesterday, June 28th, I left Leukerbad by bus for Leuk, in order to take the train to Gampel/Steg. There is the start of Stage R98. Again the weather was splendid. It was a short walk from the railway station Gampel/Steg to the starting point of the Stage. Continue reading
