The Kirchner Museum in Davos and the historic train to Filisur

The day before yesterday the weather was fine contrary to the forecasts, which made the trip to Davos pleasant. My main item of the day was a visit to the Kirchner Museum. Continue reading

High water and good cake

This morning the weather was bad – it was very cloudy, but still dry ‘though. That would not be the case for long… During the past evenings and nights, when there was little traffic noise, I had heard how the water in the river Landquart that flows to the south in the narrow valley, had been “growling”. So I decided after a visit to the local supermarket to have a look at the water. The water, that normally has a bluish colour, was greyish-brown and roared with high speed underneath the ridge, carrying along all sorts of things, from branches to complete trees… Continue reading

Another nice hike with many spring flowers

Today a stage of the Via Alpina was on the program: a next hike as a continuation of the wonderful track I have hiked last year, on op September 23th 2018. That has been Stage 61 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina: from the Caschina Hut to St. Antönien, but which I have hiked as a round trip: from St. Antönien to the Carschina Hut and back again. That tour was such a joy! Continue reading

Floral splendour in white and wonderful panoramic views

Yesterday I have left Constance for Küblis: at first the trip by train went along the Lake Constance and after that along the course of the river Rhine, which is only a very narrow stream here. Normally my journey passes via Zürich and then along the Walensee Lake to Sargans and Landquart. Now I travelled through the Rhine valley to SArgans and followed the familiar route to Landquart where I changed to the narrow gauge railway of the Rhätische Bahn. Continue reading

Scuol, Livigno and Sent

Monday September 24th I left Küblis and arrived close to half past eleven in Scuol in Hotel Altana, which has recently changed its name into Typically Swiss Hotel Altana. There the atmosphere was as cosy and charming as always, with the marvellous flowers and the good food. Continue reading

The difficult track is the most beautiful track…

This morning the weather seemed to have improved compared to yesterday: there hardly were any clouds around the mountaintops, so after a tasteful breakfast (again!), which of course include the Birchermüesli, I took the 9.18 hours Postal car to St. Antönien to start a stage of the Via Alpina in an area that was completely new to me: Stage 61 of the Red Trail. Continue reading

Through the fog and over the “Energie-Spürweg” (“Feel the energy trail”)

Early this morning I looked out of my window to check on the weather and then I saw an historical locomotive in the railway station: it was the “Krokodil” (the “crocodile”) dating from 1929, a locomotive with “cult status”! This is the showpiece of the Rhaetian Railways. Continue reading

A trip on the Glacier Express

This morning I have enjoyed for the last time the tasty breakfast in Hotel Europe with the homemade cereals and the dried fruits. Today I would like to travel from Brig to Küblis: a place in Grisons, between Landquart and the Vereina Tunnel on the road to the Engadin. I will stay in Küblis for a couple of days, also to hike one or two stages of the Via Alpina. Continue reading
