Autumnal colours and rainbows

The rain that had set in last night had stopped this morning, but the outside world looked however quite like autumn: the top of the Glishorn rising high above Brig had disappeared into the clouds and despite the small patches of blue the sky was just overcast… At Hotel Europe they had apparently had the idea that Autumn had really started, because in the breakfast room there was a nice autumnal arrangement on a table with many shades of orange. For today I had planned to go to Eischoll: a village on a mountain shoulder above the left bank of the Rhône downstream from Brig. It is some 20 minutes by train to Raron in the Rhône valley – and some 10 minutes with a tiny cable car to Eischoll. When last year I had been hiking several stages of the Via Alpina, I could see the village with its characteristic white church at the opposite side all the time. Continue reading

Beautiful hike over green mountain slopes and through an impressive valley

This morning the weather was fine again, but somewhat cooler than yesterday and with much more wind! My plan for the days to come was to go hiking on the Via Alpina once more. Last year on September 16th I had started to hike the second part of Stage 96 of the Red Trail in Belalp above Blatten and had ended in Mund. This year I would like to try to hike Stage 95 (Fieschertal to Riederalp) and the first part of Stage 96 (Riederalp to Belalp): then I would have hiked four long stages in a row. Stage 95 to Stage 98 from Fiesch to Leukerbad actually form a coherent area within the Rhône Valley and the Canton of Valais. Continue reading

Hospental-upon-Reuss and Brig/Naters-upon-Rhone

This morning I had breakfast in Hotel Drei Könige&Post in Andermatt for the last time. I needed to make just a short journey to my next destination: in Brig, where I had enjoyed myself so much in September last year. I took the 10.38 hrs. train and passed by the village of Hospental, from where the road over the Gotthard Pass towards the south starts. The day before yesterday, Thursday September 26th, I had gone there by foot – only in the early afternoon, when the rain had stopped. The weather improved more and more as that afternoon went on. “Places of power” and a battle by General Suvorov in 1799

This morning the rain came pouring down again. Therefore I have the opportunity to tell about the past days in Andermatt which I found very special. Actually by chance I was able to attend the commemoration ceremonies around the Russian “Generalissimus Suworow” and his heroic actions in the Schöllenen Gorge during his battle with Napoleon’s troops on September 24th and 25th 1799, now 220 years ago. Nice raclette at Monika and Olivier’s and a trip through the heartland of Switzerland

Hotel Plattenhof is a nice hotel in a quiet neighbourhood, near the University. Yesterday morning it was even more quiet, because it was Sunday morning… Hotel Plattenhof calls itself a design hotel and that is true. Everywhere is trendy, but especially functional design, also in the hotel rooms. Even in the corridors and in the stairwell was multi-coloured design! Continue reading

A visit to a school friend from the Romanche course

This morning I left Arnhem by the 09.17 hrs ICE train to Basel SBB in transit to Zurich, where I will be staying until Monday afternoon. I had a stop-over in the city of Aarau: there Verena is living, a lady I met a few years ago during the course Rhaeto-Romanic (Vallader) in Scuol. We had a connection and as she had invited me already several times to visit her when I had the occasion, I had sent her an e-mail to ask her whether a visit for today would be convenient. From great heights magnificent views again!

Yesterday the weather had completely cleared up: a clear blue sky with hardly any cloud. Therefore I had from my hotel room a wonderful view on the Ortler and the wooded slopes to the west of Sulden, with on top the mountain station of the chairlift Langenstein. That mountain station was the starting point of my trip: from there Weg Nr. 23 leads to a Statue of Mary, named Marlt Madonna, which hangs on the rock wall of the Marltgrat, at 2.568 metres, with impressive views on the top of the Ortler! “King Ortler”, the village and the impressive nature

Yesterday I had my last breakfast at Hotel Margun in Mals; I have said a well-meant goodbye to Family Waldner and promised to come back a next time. Mrs. Waldner pointed out to me again, half jokingly: “Schön auf dem Weg bleiben, gell…!!” (Will you please stay on the indicated tracks!), referring to my trip across the Glurnser Köpfl. So I reassured her! Continue reading

Walking in the rain and in the sunshine…

Yesterday, August 9th, I woke up with only minor muscle pain after my wild hiking adventure on Stage 69 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina the day before: from Taufers i.M. over the Rifair Scharte and the Glurnser Köpfl back to Glurns and Mals. That morning I have just taken a picture of the Glurnser Köpfl in the morning sun…! Continue reading

Orchards and blocks of white marble

Yesterday, Tuesday August 6th, I have made a short walk through Mals to Laatsch in the west and further on to Glurns. That was despite of the rain quite interesting – I will come back to it later.

Today the day started promising with the morning sun shining on the Ortler. That wouldn’t stay for long, unfortunately… Continue reading
