Hospental-upon-Reuss and Brig/Naters-upon-Rhone

This morning I had breakfast in Hotel Drei Könige&Post in Andermatt for the last time. I needed to make just a short journey to my next destination: in Brig, where I had enjoyed myself so much in September last year. I took the 10.38 hrs. train and passed by the village of Hospental, from where the road over the Gotthard Pass towards the south starts. The day before yesterday, Thursday September 26th, I had gone there by foot – only in the early afternoon, when the rain had stopped. The weather improved more and more as that afternoon went on. A lot of Mozart and beautiful panoramas, but also a chamois!

Yesterday, Wednesday April 24th, I arrived around half past two after a rather uneventful journey in Munich. There I had to look for my connecting train to Salzburg: due to some delay I was really running late and, because of ongoing construction works to the platforms of the main station, I had to squeeze through the crowds, carrying my (still quite heavy…) rucksack in a totally foreign railway station. Slightly out of breath I plumbed down in the slow train to Salzburg, leaving five minutes to three. Continue reading

A sunny day with cows, chapels and panoramas

This morning a luxurious breakfast awaited me in Hotel Europe, with a variety of muesli, cereals, dried fruits and confitures – everything “hausgemacht”, homemade. I like the hotel and the atmosphere very much this time again! After the breakfast I took the 8.18 hrs. Postal car to Blatten (officially called Blatten bei Naters, at 1.300m), which is situated high above the Rhone Valley in the valley of the Kelchbach stream. I had read that today the “Alpabzug” would take place: the cows will be guided in a festive parade from the high mountain meadows to the village. The cows’ heads are adorned with flowers and the people who guide them are all dressed up in their finest local costumes, the “Trachten”. Everything is accompanied by a lot of folk music and there are many stands and stalls with food and beverages – thus, a real popular event that I did not want to miss of course!

Festivities, but also a thunderstorm with consequenses

In the morning of August 1st I said goodbye to the nice hoteliers of Hotel Margun. I had a pleasant stay in a beautiful, interesting area. I went on my way to the Mals bus station to get on the bus to Nauders (in Austria) and Martina (in Switzerland). I would like to celebrate the First of August in Scuol again, like in recent years. And also to have a bit of a holiday after the last demanding days… Continue reading

A weekend high up in the mountains

Saturday morning I left Leukerbad after the usual copious breakfast with Birchermüesli, freshly baked bread and a. o. black cherry jam and after a nice chat with the lady who owns Hotel Dala. My next destination was Hotel Weisshorn, above St. Luc in the Val d’Anniviers Valley. Continue reading

Stage C2: Vaduz to Sargans

Shortly before nine o’clock this morning I was at the railway station of Sargans waiting for Monika and her father Werner. We took the bus to the city centre of Vaduz in the neighboring country Liechtenstein in order to return to Sargans on foot. Again the weather was beautiful. Continue reading
