… and also to the anti-tank barrier at the Plamort/Pian dei Morti

Yesterday morning I left Munich with the 7.34 hrs Eurocity-Express. In the beginning the landscape wasn’t very interesting, but near Innsbruck the mountains were already partly visible between the patches of clouds. From Innsbruck the journey continued to the Brenner Pass. From the train it became obvious that the Brenner Pass is a very important traffic artery: due to the Sunday’s driving ban for the international road traffic all parking lots were overflowing with lorries and trucks with trailer. Passing rivers and walking around the lake

This morning I took the bus from Hotel Gorizia Palace to the railway station on the Piazza Transalpina. In the station hall it showed that this is a building dating from the early 20th century: plenty of dark wood, high ceilings, remarkable tiles on the floors. The original ticket counters have been saved, but are not in use anymore. Continue reading

A day to relax, but with a lot of activities

Today I opted for a day of leisure with in the morning a visit to the “Thermal bath” in Brigerbad. My Hotel Europe had an interesting offer for a “Badecombi”: a bus trip to and from the thermal bath and an entrance for three hours. So I got on the Postal car into the direction of Saas-Fee. Hiking along the water canals

Today’s weather could not be more different from yesterday’s weather: the sun was shining already early in the morning in a cloudless sky and it promised to be a beautiful and warm day. After a hearty breakfast – I like the breakfast cereals with spelt the most! – I took the 08.18 hrs. Postal car that would take me again to Mund. Continue reading

Il cuors intensiv da rumantsch…

About my school week and school performances I shall be brief. The level of the 4th grade was significantly higher than that of the 3rd grade and I was hindered by a “speech block” (only in Vallader) and – to be honest – also by a lack of preparation. Continue reading

Rhaetoromanic in practise

Yesterday afternoon I arrived in Scuol after a overnight stay in Frankfurt am Main. In my luggage also were my schoolbooks for the course rumantsch which starts tomorrow, Monday July 23rd. But first still a day of leisure: and time for a walk that will help me to adapt to the weight of the 1½ kilometre extra air on my shoulders. So I went by Postal car to Ramosch and from there by minibus to Vnà. Continue reading

A weekend high up in the mountains

Saturday morning I left Leukerbad after the usual copious breakfast with Birchermüesli, freshly baked bread and a. o. black cherry jam and after a nice chat with the lady who owns Hotel Dala. My next destination was Hotel Weisshorn, above St. Luc in the Val d’Anniviers Valley. Continue reading

Gorizia: a tour of the city and over the border

This morning breakfast was as elaborate as it was in Trieste, but just slightly different: no longer the grilled eggplants and zucchini or the grated fennel by Signore Stefano, but pickled vegetables, like sweet-and-sour of paprika (agrodolce di peperoni) or mushrooms in oil (funghi sott’olio), which are tastier here than I can prepare it, large green olives with little acidity and small gherkins with a lot of acidity. Of course there are many sweets, but where is my lemon pie…?! Continue reading

A stage of the Route of St. James through Grisons: S-charl to Lü

After an educational week in the school benches it was about time to go outside and enjoy the fresh air. I was looking forward to set off for the mountains. The weather couldn’t be better: it was a sunny day with a pleasant temperature. The hike would be a nice one as well. Continue reading

Over the Flüela Pass back to school

I finished my first day in school of the “Cuors intensif Vallader” (The intensive course Rhaetian roman language)! At 9 o’clock this morning I gathered along with over 130 “students” in the auditorium of the school building in Scuol, all eager to learn and improve our knowledge of the Vallader, spoken in this part of the Engadin. Continue reading
