From Fieschertal over the suspension bridge to Bellwald

Today I have made another attempt to start Stage 95 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina: from Fiescheralp to Riederalp. Therefore I took the train to Fiesch again: on arrival again a large crowd got off the train and into the Postal car, that would also stop at the valley station of the cable car to the middle station Fiescheralp. At that bus stop I didn’t get off: this time I didn’t like it either… Meanwhile I had the impression that all those crowds, like “distaster tourists”, wanted to have a look how the glaciers were melting and that it could be the last time these glaciers could be seen. Unfortunately it is a fact that the glaciers are melting and that it is a worrying development as well of course. I just didn’t want to be part of that “disaster tourism”… The Postal car continues it course to the village of Fieschertal. There I got off. Continue reading

Rhaetoromanic in practise

Yesterday afternoon I arrived in Scuol after a overnight stay in Frankfurt am Main. In my luggage also were my schoolbooks for the course rumantsch which starts tomorrow, Monday July 23rd. But first still a day of leisure: and time for a walk that will help me to adapt to the weight of the 1½ kilometre extra air on my shoulders. So I went by Postal car to Ramosch and from there by minibus to Vnà. Continue reading

Over the Gemmi Pass and around the Daubensee Lake

The mountain world around Leukerbad is overwhelming: the end of this valley is protected by the Daubenhorn (2.942 m) in the west, by the Plattenhörner (2.605 ‒ 2.855 m) in the north and the Torrenthorn (2.998 m) in the east. It is pleasantly silent in Leukerbad. Also the minimal light pollution in the night is a bliss: there are a few street lanterns illightened and that is it. Hotel Dala offers a beautiful view in the direction of the Gemmibahn, but also on the traces of avalanches that have come down in early spring just close to the village. Continue reading

A stage of the Route of St. James through Grisons: S-charl to Lü

After an educational week in the school benches it was about time to go outside and enjoy the fresh air. I was looking forward to set off for the mountains. The weather couldn’t be better: it was a sunny day with a pleasant temperature. The hike would be a nice one as well. Continue reading
