Hospental-upon-Reuss and Brig/Naters-upon-Rhone

This morning I had breakfast in Hotel Drei Könige&Post in Andermatt for the last time. I needed to make just a short journey to my next destination: in Brig, where I had enjoyed myself so much in September last year. I took the 10.38 hrs. train and passed by the village of Hospental, from where the road over the Gotthard Pass towards the south starts. The day before yesterday, Thursday September 26th, I had gone there by foot – only in the early afternoon, when the rain had stopped. The weather improved more and more as that afternoon went on. The trip to S-charl is beautiful  – in summer and in winter!

When I left Sulden am Ortler last Thursday, August 15th by bus, the driver was somehow grumpy, apparently not very happy to have to work on the festive day “Assumption of Mary”: it seemed as if he didn’t understand German, so buying a ticket to Scuol in Switzerland proved to be too large a task for me as well for him. So I bought a ticket to Mal. At the change of bus in Spondinig into the direction of Mals the ticket turned out to be wrong, but also this driver only spoke Italian – my co-passengers were interpreting for me… But the sun was shining, so why having any problems! The trip by Postal car from Mals to Zernez went well – I have cast a look to the steep slope from Taufers i.M. to the Rifairalm that I had climbed a week ago…! Continue reading

No longer through the Clemgia Gorge…

Yesterday I have hiked Stage 67 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina for the second time, that is to say the first part: from Scuol to Plan da Funtanas, about halfway to S-charl, the destination of this stage. It was almost just on the day two years ago that I hiked this stage for the first time: on June 12th 2017 I have started on the Via Alpina! I still remember very well how amazing this hike had been – and hoe promising the Via Alpina was at that moment. And I know by now hoe amazing and promising the Via Alpina is – and without a doubt will continue to be! Continue reading

Through the fog and over the “Energie-Spürweg” (“Feel the energy trail”)

Early this morning I looked out of my window to check on the weather and then I saw an historical locomotive in the railway station: it was the “Krokodil” (the “crocodile”) dating from 1929, a locomotive with “cult status”! This is the showpiece of the Rhaetian Railways. Continue reading

Festivities, but also a thunderstorm with consequenses

In the morning of August 1st I said goodbye to the nice hoteliers of Hotel Margun. I had a pleasant stay in a beautiful, interesting area. I went on my way to the Mals bus station to get on the bus to Nauders (in Austria) and Martina (in Switzerland). I would like to celebrate the First of August in Scuol again, like in recent years. And also to have a bit of a holiday after the last demanding days… Continue reading

Sculptures and relaxation

After my arrival last Monday I have indeed been able to enjoy the quietness and the hospitality at Hotel Altana. I still was rather active ‘though. On Wednesday, July 4th, I made again one of the walks which are my favourites when I do not want to make so much effort: from Scuol to Sur En, about a one-and-a-half hour on foot alongside the river Inn. Continue reading

A Stage with beautiful views, but not from ladders…

Yesterday, June 28th, I left Leukerbad by bus for Leuk, in order to take the train to Gampel/Steg. There is the start of Stage R98. Again the weather was splendid. It was a short walk from the railway station Gampel/Steg to the starting point of the Stage. Continue reading

A stage of the Route of St. James through Grisons: S-charl to Lü

After an educational week in the school benches it was about time to go outside and enjoy the fresh air. I was looking forward to set off for the mountains. The weather couldn’t be better: it was a sunny day with a pleasant temperature. The hike would be a nice one as well. Continue reading

Stage C3a: Sargans to Weisstannen

The first part of the hike was quiet: I walked between the railway line and houses with well-maintained gardens and a view on the Castle and the Gonzen, passed under the motorway and then walked through the outskirts of Mels. The weather was beautiful. Continue reading
