Autumnal colours and rainbows

The rain that had set in last night had stopped this morning, but the outside world looked however quite like autumn: the top of the Glishorn rising high above Brig had disappeared into the clouds and despite the small patches of blue the sky was just overcast… At Hotel Europe they had apparently had the idea that Autumn had really started, because in the breakfast room there was a nice autumnal arrangement on a table with many shades of orange. For today I had planned to go to Eischoll: a village on a mountain shoulder above the left bank of the Rhône downstream from Brig. It is some 20 minutes by train to Raron in the Rhône valley – and some 10 minutes with a tiny cable car to Eischoll. When last year I had been hiking several stages of the Via Alpina, I could see the village with its characteristic white church at the opposite side all the time. Continue reading

From wind mills along the mountain slopes to a lighthouse!

Today the weather was fine with down in the village nice temperatures and not too much wind. Now I would like to do what I had been up to last Tuesday, September 24th, but what I have skipped for the concert by the Suvorov Cadet’s Band: to go with the gondola from Andermatt by the middle station Nätschen to the end station Gütsch, from there by foot over the Höhenweg to close by the mountain top of the Schneehüenerstock, then to go down with another gondola and via the Oberalp Pass back by train to Andermatt. Panoramic views from the Rifair Scharte and the Glurner Köpfl

Yesterday morning I have started to hike Stage 69 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina: from Taufers im Münstertal, just on the border between Switzerland and Italy, via the Rifaier Alm over the Rifair Scharte Pass to Stilfs in the valley of the Suldenbach stream and the Stilfserjoch Pass. This stage is the sequel of Stage 68 of the Red Trail: from S-charl to Taufers over the S-charljöchl and through the beautiful Val Avigna valley, which I have hiked about two years ago, on June 13th 2017 and which I have enjoyed so much! ! A sunny day with cows, chapels and panoramas

This morning a luxurious breakfast awaited me in Hotel Europe, with a variety of muesli, cereals, dried fruits and confitures – everything “hausgemacht”, homemade. I like the hotel and the atmosphere very much this time again! After the breakfast I took the 8.18 hrs. Postal car to Blatten (officially called Blatten bei Naters, at 1.300m), which is situated high above the Rhone Valley in the valley of the Kelchbach stream. I had read that today the “Alpabzug” would take place: the cows will be guided in a festive parade from the high mountain meadows to the village. The cows’ heads are adorned with flowers and the people who guide them are all dressed up in their finest local costumes, the “Trachten”. Everything is accompanied by a lot of folk music and there are many stands and stalls with food and beverages – thus, a real popular event that I did not want to miss of course!

Il cuors intensiv da rumantsch…

About my school week and school performances I shall be brief. The level of the 4th grade was significantly higher than that of the 3rd grade and I was hindered by a “speech block” (only in Vallader) and – to be honest – also by a lack of preparation. Continue reading

A weekend high up in the mountains

Saturday morning I left Leukerbad after the usual copious breakfast with Birchermüesli, freshly baked bread and a. o. black cherry jam and after a nice chat with the lady who owns Hotel Dala. My next destination was Hotel Weisshorn, above St. Luc in the Val d’Anniviers Valley. Continue reading

A Stage with beautiful views, but not from ladders…

Yesterday, June 28th, I left Leukerbad by bus for Leuk, in order to take the train to Gampel/Steg. There is the start of Stage R98. Again the weather was splendid. It was a short walk from the railway station Gampel/Steg to the starting point of the Stage. Continue reading

Stage C3a: Sargans to Weisstannen

The first part of the hike was quiet: I walked between the railway line and houses with well-maintained gardens and a view on the Castle and the Gonzen, passed under the motorway and then walked through the outskirts of Mels. The weather was beautiful. Continue reading

The next stage: R68

This day promised to be quiet warm when I took early this morning the 7.45 hours Postauto to S-charl – the place I ended my first stage of the Via Alpina yesterday. At a quarter past 8 I started my second stage. Continue reading
