Hospental-upon-Reuss and Brig/Naters-upon-Rhone

This morning I had breakfast in Hotel Drei Könige&Post in Andermatt for the last time. I needed to make just a short journey to my next destination: in Brig, where I had enjoyed myself so much in September last year. I took the 10.38 hrs. train and passed by the village of Hospental, from where the road over the Gotthard Pass towards the south starts. The day before yesterday, Thursday September 26th, I had gone there by foot – only in the early afternoon, when the rain had stopped. The weather improved more and more as that afternoon went on. From wind mills along the mountain slopes to a lighthouse!

Today the weather was fine with down in the village nice temperatures and not too much wind. Now I would like to do what I had been up to last Tuesday, September 24th, but what I have skipped for the concert by the Suvorov Cadet’s Band: to go with the gondola from Andermatt by the middle station Nätschen to the end station Gütsch, from there by foot over the Höhenweg to close by the mountain top of the Schneehüenerstock, then to go down with another gondola and via the Oberalp Pass back by train to Andermatt. “Places of power” and a battle by General Suvorov in 1799

This morning the rain came pouring down again. Therefore I have the opportunity to tell about the past days in Andermatt which I found very special. Actually by chance I was able to attend the commemoration ceremonies around the Russian “Generalissimus Suworow” and his heroic actions in the Schöllenen Gorge during his battle with Napoleon’s troops on September 24th and 25th 1799, now 220 years ago. Nice raclette at Monika and Olivier’s and a trip through the heartland of Switzerland

Hotel Plattenhof is a nice hotel in a quiet neighbourhood, near the University. Yesterday morning it was even more quiet, because it was Sunday morning… Hotel Plattenhof calls itself a design hotel and that is true. Everywhere is trendy, but especially functional design, also in the hotel rooms. Even in the corridors and in the stairwell was multi-coloured design! Continue reading

Walking in the rain and in the sunshine…

Yesterday, August 9th, I woke up with only minor muscle pain after my wild hiking adventure on Stage 69 of the Red Trail of the Via Alpina the day before: from Taufers i.M. over the Rifair Scharte and the Glurnser Köpfl back to Glurns and Mals. That morning I have just taken a picture of the Glurnser Köpfl in the morning sun…! Continue reading

The Kirchner Museum in Davos and the historic train to Filisur

The day before yesterday the weather was fine contrary to the forecasts, which made the trip to Davos pleasant. My main item of the day was a visit to the Kirchner Museum. Continue reading

A mountain track by train and evening atmosphere by the water

This morning I left Arnhem by train just after nine o’clock to go to Offenburg in the southern part of Germany. There I changed trains to Constance at the Lake Constance: this Schwarzwaldexpess (Black Forest Railway) connects Karlsruhe to the north of Offenburg with Constance at Lake Constance through the middle part of the Black Forest. Passing rivers and walking around the lake

This morning I took the bus from Hotel Gorizia Palace to the railway station on the Piazza Transalpina. In the station hall it showed that this is a building dating from the early 20th century: plenty of dark wood, high ceilings, remarkable tiles on the floors. The original ticket counters have been saved, but are not in use anymore. Continue reading

Through the fog and over the “Energie-Spürweg” (“Feel the energy trail”)

Early this morning I looked out of my window to check on the weather and then I saw an historical locomotive in the railway station: it was the “Krokodil” (the “crocodile”) dating from 1929, a locomotive with “cult status”! This is the showpiece of the Rhaetian Railways. Continue reading

A trip on the Glacier Express

This morning I have enjoyed for the last time the tasty breakfast in Hotel Europe with the homemade cereals and the dried fruits. Today I would like to travel from Brig to Küblis: a place in Grisons, between Landquart and the Vereina Tunnel on the road to the Engadin. I will stay in Küblis for a couple of days, also to hike one or two stages of the Via Alpina. Continue reading
